Now that the program is just about done, the cost to manufacture and ship a copy is $2.00 in materials and postage, 5 minutes of labor. Marketing is the killer though, I am not sure how to get the word out. The State of R.I. is paying a marketing consultant to work with me (no cost to me, the state wants to encourage the growth of small businesses). So this should be a very exciting project. My first program, AutoScribe, has sold only 8 copies so far ($49 retail). That program is much more limited in scope and is only for other programmers. Hopefully, the marketing consultant will help me there too. Getting on to more important things, Arlene's recent pap test has come back perfectly clean, implying that the Doctor has removed most if not all of the problem. She is having no other problems and is able to lift the kids and do housework without pain or discomfort. She will still probably have a hysterectomy (sp?) in November or December but then again, how many kids do I need anyway? We are sort of down right now because one of our best friends has been diagnosed with breast cancer at age 36 and will require the removal of both breasts and much therapy. Such is life. All of the kids are doing fine. Anne is not the most pleasant person always, but we are working very hard to control her behavoir now so that she won't be totally off the wall as a teenager. This will prove to be a challenge. On Saturday I am planning to swim across Naragansett Bay from Newport to Jamestown (2 miles). I will have an escort boat and the Coast Guard is sponsoring the swim (130 people) so it should be very safe. I have been training for this 3 days a week since December so it should be no problem. I don't care if I come in last as long as I finish. The State has added to the confusion by not (as of yet anyway) preparing detailed maps of the new districts. He was an expert without peer in the soap industry. Shirley Germershausen at Bradford Soap relayed to me that you recently contacted her seeking additional technical support on some projects you and Juan were jointly pursuing. I don't claim to have the same depth of knowledge possesed by Juan, but I have been working as a consultant to the soap and chemical process industry for the last 10 years and have been employed at Procter and Gamble as both a project engineer and technical sales representative earlier in my career. At Bradford I have implemented and (I believe) improved on Juan's process for kettle preparation of soap from whole fats and oils and have authored the Kettle Soap Process Simulator, a computerized simulation package for manufacturing of soaps, as well as several other computer models pertaining to both the manufacturing, control and accounting aspects of chemical processes. The "KSPS" is discussed in detail in the January, 1987 issue of HAPPI. I can forward a reprint to you if you so desire. AutoAddress was to be reviewed as a possible candidate to do just that. AutoAddress is written in FoxBase/Mac, which is the fastest of the data bases available today.
